VAN WERT — Van Wert baseball has been playing excellent baseball this season but have really found their stride over the last few weeks. Since a pair of setbacks to state respected programs in Defiance and Fairview the Cougars have been on a streak outscoring their opponents 32-1 over the past three games.

Last Saturday the Cougs enjoyed a rare experience when they defeated Edon 7-0 last Saturday at the Toledo Mud Hen’s 5th/3rd Field. Playing on a professional ball field was something many players never dream of, let alone get to experience. Currently the Cougars are sitting at 12-2 overall and are tied for first place in the dominate Western Buckeye League. The Cougars sit a 4-1 league record. Still on the schedule is Shawnee, Bath, Kenton and Elida in league play.

As of late the team is firing on all cylinders, as evidence by their overall team batting average of .330, their OBP of .417, a team ERA of 0.85 and a team fielding percentage of .962. The Cougars have outscored their opponents on the season 103-17, a run differential of 86 runs. The Cougars are averaging 7.4 runs per game while only allowing 1.21. Currently seven players are hitting over .300 including, Jalen McCracken .389, Nathan Temple .385, Jaxson Amweg .375, Hayden Maples .364, Parker Conrad .364, TJ Reynolds .342, and Owen Treece .313. Maples currently leads the Cougars with 16 RBIs, and 13 runs scored.

The Cougar Pitching Staff has been dominate all season. Treece leads the Cougars with 29.2 innings, followed by Hayden Maples (21 IP), Lawson Blackmore (18 IP) and Parker Conrad (14.1 IP). Blackmore leads the team with 32 strikeouts in only 18 innings. Treece has recorded 31 strikeouts and Maples has 23 on the year. The team has punched out exactly 100 opposing hitters while only surrendering 31 walks in 91 overall innings pitched.

The Cougar’s defense has been stellar as well. Second baseman Jake Lautzenheiser and Pitcher/3B Parker Conrad have played error free baseball so far this season. First baseman Nathan Temple is fielding .987, followed by P/C Hayden Maples at .977, P/C Owen Treece at .960, and SS Jaxson Amweg at .939. Keaton Brown has three outfield assists and Jalen McCracken has one on the year.

The Cougars look to stay hot with games on Thursday against Shawnee and a Saturday double header with Delphos St. John’s. All games will be at Smiley Park.
