MIDDLE POINT — Although 4th-seeded Lincolnview was out-hit 12-9 by 6th-seeded Columbus Grove in Thursday’s Division IV sectional final, the Lady Lancers took advantage of 10 walks, three hit batters, and five Bulldog errors to pull out a 17-9 win.

Next up for Lincolnview (14-6) is a district semi-final against top-seeded Parkway at Elida Tuesday at 4:00. The Lady Panthers blasted 9th-seeded Continental 24-0 Thursday. Columbus Grove is now 6-10. Lincolnview had beaten Grove 16-4 during the regular season.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a bunt single by shortstop Danielle Bame, sacrifice bunt by third baseman Kam Utendorf, and RBI single by starting pitcher Emily Watt. They would never lead again.

The Lancers sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs, three earned, on two hits, three walks, a hit batter, and two Grove errors. Lincolnview made it 10-1 with five more tallies, two earned, in the second via only one hit, four walks, and two more Bulldog errors. Ten Lancers went to the plate in that frame. At that point, it looked like a run-rule rout was underway, but the ‘Dogs had other ideas.

Columbus Grove absolutely pounded the ball in the top of the third, scoring eight runs, all earned, on eight hits. Thirteen Bulldogs batted in the inning, narrowing the Lincolnview lead to 10-9. Seven of those eight runs were charged to starter Amy Beair, who was relieved mid-rally in the circle by Winter Boroff. Boroff was greeted by three consecutive singles — Bame, Utendorf, and Watt — but she was in control from that point on.

That 10-9 score held until the bottom of the fifth when Lincolnview ended the suspense with six more runs, all earned, on only three hits, taking advantage of a walk, a hit batter, and a couple of misplays, not errors, including allowing Lancer first baseman Destiny Coil to score by escaping a pickle between third and home — 16-9, Lincolnview, after five.

The home team scored its 17th run in the bottom of the sixth. Only a sensational catcher by Watt, now playing centerfield, on a Coil liner prevented further damage.

Boroff was stellar in relief, going 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run, earned, on four hits, striking out two, and walking nobody. She threw 62 pitches, of which 38 (61 percent) were strikes. She was aided by some consistently solid defense by catcher Tori Boyd and third baseman Morgan Miller.

Miller was also the hitting star for Lincolnview, going 3 for 3, walking twice, scoring four times, and driving in a run. The Lancers also got multiple hits (and one outstanding catch) from leftfielder Carly Wendel (2 for 3, two runs scored, two RBI) and from Boyd (2 for 3, two RBI).

All nine Bulldogs who batted had at least one hit, led by Bame, who also had an outstanding day in the field. She went 2 for 3, scored three times, and drove in one. Grove also got multiple hits from Watt (2 for 4, three RBI) and first baseman Joy Stechschulte (2 for 4, one run scored).
